Drama in the EFL Classroom

  1. He works in ‘Escuela 230’ Temuco, in the South of Chile.
  2. He had always loved theater. He wanted to bring Drama to his classes because he noticed that student really enjoyed classes with this kind of activities
  3. He and his students were preparing ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’, and during the process they have many problems such as convince to shy student to participate in this play. On the other hand, this play was time consumed for Pedro Pérez; the teacher, it takes to him too long to prepare the whole script and decide which students will interpret each character; nobody wanted to be an Umpa-lupa.
  4. Taking the place of this teacher, if I’d have to cope to this kind of problems, probably I’ll try to things well before propose this huge project to my students, and be sure that they want to be part of it and they want to cooperate. I’ll convince to my student how entertaining this activity it’s going to be for them and show them that it a great opportunity to improve their English speaking through a group and didactic assignment.
  5. In my opinion, to give student to be part of this kind of didactic activities is a perfect way to foster them to improve their English speaking, to acquire more personality, to felt more comfortable at the moment to step in front of the class in order to present a topic. ‘Drama activities would sometimes have surprising and unexpected results’. In the most of the  cases teachers get a great result of this, but some student have problems when teaches ask them to make a performance in front of the class because they are so shy for take the challenge. Finally, other disadvantages of using Drama as a way to teach could be that student don’t take it as seriously as it is.  

FACEBOOK USED FOR LEARNING PROCESS”

 

The social networks were created to keep each other informed and obviously in touch in every place of this planet. Many people use it privately for keeping their friends in touch. But that isn’t the only way in which this tool can be used. On the last year with the student’s revolution many of these tools have been used as a way to communicate with others and agree for different purposes. Therefore, the use of this resource has increased considerably in teenagers, adults and even seniors.

Facebook is the most knowing resource with more of hundred and twenty million users. It was created back in 2004 in Harvard with the intention of connect the students . This tool became global and these days everybody has one. The benefits of this social network are that student’s already know how to use it. They use to create groups chat, apps, share information, photos and videos. The best of this network is that it is free and accessible to all. If we want to be friends of technology and make it beneficial for everyday learning here we have our proposal to how to use it.

 

If we start to think how we can use social networks for teaching, we will realize that it is not a difficult work at all. Social networks have become in the most used platforms for sharing information between people. Why not using them for teaching and learning? The apps for example, are a quite good and complete way for learning. People can create their own apps, which are very interactive, with friends.

An App gives you the chance to go deeply in what you want to show. You can create an app according to your methods and show them to people. Apps are a friendly way for teaching, and at the same time, learning. They also can be shared with your friends through invitations. It is also amused for people. Therefore, it is going to be a great experience for them while they learn.

There are many ways that we can use to teach something through Facebook. One way is what we said before but another way to use this app with a learning purpose and didactically is through images, sounds and videos. As you know, is very easy for people to share this kind of multimedia files on Facebook. Everybody knows how to do it.

Children and youth are characterized by have poor concentration, get desconcentrate easily and get bored with everything, so why don’t use this social network uploading videos with real classes of some specific material and activities where kinds could leave their opinions as a post under the video and at the same time can share those opinions with many people who are learning too?

 

‘It is scientifically proven that the concentration of people takes 30 to 45 min’. Related to this affirmation, the fact of give themselves the control of their time will do more fruitful their learning process. If we add to this that they can also reproduce it  as many times as they want it and think about sharing opinions with others, the result is an acquisition of knowledge in a personalized way for each student in an easy way.

On the other hand, If teachers can upload their videos, students can also do the same.

See himself through a recording is useful for everyone to see what fails and what needs to be improved. Self-assessment is the best mechanism to improve.

As we know Facebook is not only a social network, but a new way of learning English. All of us at some moment of our lives we played a game on Facebook, and we know that they are fun and a good way of spend our free time. But also these games can use for purposes of learning English.

A great example of games that teach us by Facebook is Island Academy. It is a game of the University of Cambridge where an unknown alien travels to the earth and has to learn English to get by in a range of social situations. You have to progress through different difficulty levels by helping the alien use English in a range of situations. This alien get to the earth and finds to a human but the alien can’t communicate with him, so this visitor must learn speaking English for understand people of the earth. There are different town, that are Pronoun town, Noun town, Plural town, Simile town, Adjective town and Vowel town where you can practice those topic and can improve your English. The alien travels through of cities, but first you have to finish a level to begin the next one. Each town has some places where you must get in for answer some question that the locals asks to you about the topic of the city that where you are. Whereas you gain more and more points can get in the academy that is the final test of your learning English.

As we know, Facebook is used by several people, in other words, many countries can express their ideas using their languages. By the way, a social web like Facebook has the obligation to give us the facility to present us different languages to express us, the most comfortable. If people want to learn a language using a site like this, (English and Facebook in this case), they have to prepare themselves to use and give the whole information that they can in English and not just waiting for new apps to put in practice the language and their learning. It has to be intensive. Changing the language in your personal account will help you to add and assimilate quickly new words that you were using as usual in Spanish. Another way you can use, it’s introduce yourself in some pages related with your likes. Giving a “like” only in your favorite band page as an example gives you the opportunity to comment and get new information about your likes, and in the same time people start to have communication among them. When people begin to speak with other people, native speakers in this web, they learn more vocabulary and a more fast English, to be in a conversation induce to someone to be more concentrated, and the only fact to answer something becomes your mind faster. Another relevant point is that, everyone expresses their ideas, thoughts and feelings at least once. In the case of people who want to learn, they have to do the same, express them using English. Also, that method is useful to fixed your English, you can learn from your mistakes by other friends who are able to help you if they find any wrong word. Here we can see how using apps it is not the only way to start to learn a language in a social site as on Facebook.

 American education system and Chilean education system.

We already know that American and Chilean cultures are very different between each other. Socially speaking and politically speaking they haven’t much in common. So far, if we talk about education is not very different to the other topics said before; Policy and social. We can find many differences but also a few of similarities. Collecting information about each country I can make a comparison between them. I can say that what you are going to read now it’s not very new. Perhaps I found specific information that you didn’t know, but the rest is maybe a little bit well-known. Through this work we could compare both education systems and maybe we could deduce what is wrong with our education system.

 

Because the society is quite different in each country is that the education system is also different. I will talk about the time spent at school. From my point of view, one of the most important topics. In Chile students are required to attend at school fourteen years, while in America they just need twelve years. This first fact talks about the difference in maturity between kids from America and our kids. Focusing in America, these twelve years are divided in two big sections of six in a primary level and the last six in a secondary level, contrary to Chile, where this division is more complicated. In Chile there are two pre-elementary levels called pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten, then we have eight years of primary school and finally the last four years of secondary school.

 

Now, related to the schedule. On one hand Chileans students arrive at school at 8 a.m.. On the other hand American people arrive at school at 9 a.m.. One extra hour to sleep. Schedules are not helping our kids. If we refer to ‘worked hours’ we see that in Chile, kids spend at less nine hours every day at school while Americans spend just seven hours. In spite of all these hours spent at school and away from home, what do Chilean teachers do? They send more homework, so children arrive at home ¡finally! But they have to continue doing work from school. This is something that doesn’t happen frequently in America.

 

One of the good things that Chile has in contrast to America, is the fact that here is not obligatory to study on Saturdays as in America. They make a lot of special courses on that specific day. However, if we compare the nine hours per day that Chilean kids study; without Saturdays, and the seven hours per day in Americans school with Saturdays, at the end is very similar. Also both prefer to do their works at school in order to concentrate better in places such as the library. These are facts that make children stay away of home for a long time. I can add that too many hours of work produce fatigue in students affecting their efficiency.

 

Related to vacations, both countries are very different places climatologically talking. America is situated at the north of the continent, and at the other extreme of the continent is Chile.  This ‘weather factor’ conditions the holidays dates. Americans have three free weeks on summer. However, in Chile we have two free months because of the summer holidays. They have two free weeks on December, but we start our summer vacations on December. On October we are in ‘exam period’ while they have one week to rest. In  this area are many differences between America and Chilean education system, but these differences are mainly on dates because if we join all the free weeks that each country have, the result is going to be quite similar in both cases.

 

Finally, did you notice why our kids are quite different in contrast to American kids? It’s referred to maturity time. There are many factors which make us different in relation to them. The roof of everything is Education. Our kids waste hours and hours at school doing work and learning, for then they arrive at home to do the same thing. We don’t have to be a ‘copy’ of American education system, but we can take the good things. For example, they make their homework at school while here is completely different. Or they go to the school for twelve years contrary to the fourteen years that we use at school. Two years can make the difference, maybe our kids are not prepared to leave the school so young, but that’s why we have to improve our education from the root and who knows if in a future our system is better than the American system?

Music in the EFL Classroom: My answers and thoughts.

1- According to the author’s reasons about why we should use music in the classroom, I completely agree. Talking about Affective reasons, there’s clear that good music provide a positive atmosphere, so is more easy for student to learn more and faster because of the music is creating a confidence environment between kids. Related to cognitive reasons, using songs can help automatize the language development process, in fact, is verified that hear the same stimulus many and many times helps to keep the information in our brain, the most of the time, unconsciously. Finally, linguistics’ reasons are obvious. Personally, I learnt English through the music.

2- In my opinion, that one person cloud learn English through the music is very possible because of I was one of that people who learnt English by their selves through the music. I think that it’s a very good and maybe easy way to learn new vocabulary and pronunciation at the same time.

 

3- I think that the best type of music for learn English is Romantic music because that kind of singers, in the most of the cases, have a very good pronounce, also the rhythm of this songs is mostly slow, so you can understand the lyric easily.

 

4- No, on the contrary, music in the classroom could be useful at any age. There are many types of music, lyrics, rhythms, voices and singers that we can choose according to the age.

5-Now, If I were teacher now and I should teach ”Modals for speculation” I’ll use this song:
